Clarification on UT2004 versions: Mac, Linux , and Windows for AMD64.

We are planning to ship UT2004 on OS X at approximately the same time as the Windows release. It will be published by Macsoft and will also include optimizations for the new G5 processors.

UT2004 will support Linux (both client and server) as well. As with UT2003, Linux support will be included in the box with UT2004. This time we'll make sure it gets mentioned on the box.

In case you also weren't aware of this: the Windows version of UT2004 will include native 64-bit support for AMD Athlon 64. Tim Sweeney and Ryan Gordon demonstrated the 64-bit version of UT2004 at today's AMD64 launch event in San Francisco.

There was an AMD 64 launch thingy with UT2004 in SF and I missed it?

D'OH!

Oh, well.

Many thanks to Epic for their continued support of freedom of choice.

does anyone know how ut is running on the windows64 beta? 64-bit support is great and all, but not much use if the operating system is a pos.

It's really good to hear this -- that cross platform development is happening at the same time and/or in rapid succession.

Awesome!

Since cross platform development is simultaneous this time round, will Mac users get a map editor also?
Plzzzz if you enable one for us I'll by UTK4. If it doesn't, I'm sticking to UTK3

Mujoo i dont think its a simple task to do porting the editor.. So my guess is no.. Plus they'd haveto support the editor if they did a mac version, and i dont see that happening.

So is this gonna just sense whether or not you have XP Pro 64-Bit and install the binaries it needs for that? Or do you have to run a seperate installer, or whatnot?

Cool on all fronts though.

We have not decided for sure but I think what we'll do is have you install the normal 32-bit version and then run an update program, that comes on the CD, to update it to 64-bit. At the time we ship Windows XP 64-bit edition will most likely still be in beta so I think this is the safest way to handle it.

AMD promises 32 bit compatibility, while Intel does not.
Should someone own an Intel 64bit, trying to install a 32 bit wont work.
Thats the problem I see with Intel;s decision to not be 32 bit compatible.

Making just a dedicated 64 bit system is
simply creating another MAC. no offense to MAC users.

Intel would have to make some kind 32 bit emulator to get around this.

of course the game should be compatible between 32 and 64 bit online play IE file size mismatches when joining...

I wonder if its possible for 32bit .exe running on a 64bit CPU, detect that the CPU is 64bit and use the 64bit extensions/larger registers/other stuff, thus achiving better results. I guess this is more programming work though.

Hey, cool, I was worried if I upgraded my system to an Athlon 64 it wouldn't support UT2004, also good to hear it's going to be released on Mac OS X at the same time!

Great news that companies are already jumping on the 64 bit bandwagon (thumbs up for Tim Sweeny)

I just hope that Windows XP 64 Bit edition can run 32 bit apps the same speed as the normal WinXP

I have a friend on the MS OS Test group and they say the AMD 64 has GREAT 32 bit compatability and Intel doesn't have any.

Linux 64?

As I heard from gamestar.de, there will be a 64Bit Linux Version too for the AMD64 platform, but I can't interpret that from Marks posting.
So will there be one or not? (although I could ask icculus directly, but he isn't in the channel as often as before, seems very busy *g*)
