BLITZBALL-A new Bombing Run Experience!

BR-Blitzball
Hi all, I have noticed that bomb running is always lacking in the amount of rooms/players so I desided to give it a bit of a kick in the ass. I have created a map that takes place in a blitzball arena. It makes for a much more sports/teamwork play.

Players spawn in their team locker room and you have a choice entering one of three teleporters that warp you into the arena. Your choices of portals are, forward, defence, and goal keeper. And yes you will require a goal keeper, other wise players could score goals from thier own zone. You could even have the whole team playing goalie but whats the point in that. The map also has the orginal blitzball music from FFX, that might sound like it would lower the quialty of the game but it actualy ups it. The map is nicely balanced, you can't cheap out a team by say, taking out thier goalie from your zone. (even if you tryed to kill a goalie it would be very hard, thier invisable goalie crease regenerates health and 150 points of armor spawns near the net)

Anyways I hope this will give bomb running a second wind, thats if it ever had one. Just a note for people that wanna host a room with this map, gameplay works much better with translocator disabled, and 3rd persion allowed.
If you have any problems, double check the location of the blitzball files, there should be a BR-blitzball file in the maps folder, XRT-blitzball.utx in texturesfolder, XRT-blitzball.usx in the staticmesh folder, and KR-blitzball in the music folder. If your still having problems, just respond in this forum post and ill try to give you a hand.

Comments or suggestions? We wan't to hear em!
(This map was made to be a promotion to Unreal XRT, www.unrealxrt.com - WE NEED A PROGRAMMER!)

Edit: Oh, and we may release new versions of these kind of maps if people enjoy playing them, right now the only problem we are seeing is that swim speed is a little slow, we are working on this and in new map releases it will probally be faster.

If it works like the one in FFX it will own,
Suggestions...

Maybe only allow shield gun or close range weapons so only close up attacks like in FFX.

Some kind of boost or dodges that can be done underwater.

Need to be able to shoot an incoming ball to intercept i think.

Is the area a sphere - it looks amazing,

GOOD LUCK

Well mabey a version of the map could only allow the shield gun, we'll look into it.
Currently we are having problems editing the map so you swim faster in water, the current solution to this is haveing SuperPills, addy that give you 100 when you run over it so you can do alot of speed boosts.
Shooting the ball may need some programming work, keep in mind this is not a mod, its just a tweeked BR map/

Yes, the arena is a sphere filled with liquid.

So that area is a giant floating water ballon of some sort?
So players "swim" around just like in FFX?
Cant dl now.

actually, surely it would save a whole lot of hassle if, rather than trying to force the player to just use the Shield Gun, you just made a DB-Blitzball rather than a BR-Blitzball? Deathball by its very nature is a mod which involves only a single room - a map like this would give it some variety. BTW, if you can figure out how to do it (and it can most certainly be done), change the item / ball bases to something more fitting and altogether less "I should be on a solid surface" looking.

Incidently, I thought that Blitzball was crap, but mainly because it was a turned based turd of a "side-quest". Never, ever show an FMV of the coolest thing ever (TM) and then make a turned based sports game to represent it to the player. *shudder* . Hmm... I just didn't like FFX full stop....

--- Edit after playing:

Hmm... this is a difficult one. To be blunt, long ranged weapons are a pain in the butt on this map. I can picture it being double billed on a IG server with Thorns *shudders* (and btw, why is there an AvRil launcher on a map with no vehicles?). However, until you've sorted out swimming speed, Close Range combat isn't very fun either, and even then, it'd suffer from the player's inability to perform jump and the dodge style moves that make shield gunning at all easy (or fun for that matter). It's a shame, because you've really done a pretty damned good job transitioning the Blitzball arena to UT2004. If you could replace the stock meshes for the goals with those triangular Blitzball ones, and make a faithful scoreboard (that semitransparent thingy, with the two classical pillar type things on either side), I believe you'd just about be there (replace the ball start base as well though).

In my opinion, this would work far better as a Deathball map. The scoring system would be more faithful, you'd be able to easily implement your own custom goals (because in DB, goals are zones rather than predefined meshes, or at least thats my understanding of it), you'd automatically force your players to use Close-Range attacks, you'd benefit from DB's specialised passing, map and hud systems and you'd benefit from the way that DB automatically sets out a field of Attackers, Midfielders, Defenders and a Goalkeeper (and your "locker room" kind of brings down the quality of the map). Then perhaps you could expand on the restrictive underwater movement options by adding some kind of underwater dodge and "jump / crouch" movements, and then it could be some serious fun... maybe even what FFX Blitzball should have actually been!

Oh, and stop the players from suffocating underwater.

the_artist: Thanks for all the great feedback. Once Unreal eXtreme Racing Tournament gets a lead programmer we will adress these issues hopefully.
Thanks for all the feedback!

edit: Hmm, I don't know why people would be drowning, I never drown... Well perhaps once we get a programmer we will issue out a map pack with unbuggy Blitzball maps in it for a little promotion of XRT.

It's strange actually - I was never able to fully drown on the map. I killed all the bots (as in, removing them permanetly), but was still taking damage after a time. Still, I didn't die when - a. I picked up adrenaline pills and b. I picked up the ball (because having the ball heals you faster than you take drowning damage). That reminds me, you could reskin the ball to be closer to a Blitzball. Hell, you could give us Wakka and Tidus models, and I wouldn't be complaining

Oh, and if you're going to do different themed Blitzball maps, do a moogle forest or something ^.^ (kupo!)

this is a super awesome map! i just played it a bit, but against bots. more ppl need to play it online. its awesome. the bots are too easy though. there is no goalkeeper and you can score from anywhere pretty much. this would be an awesome MOD to make, not just a map. i mean, it would be awesome for it to play just like blitzball, with those kickass super shots and attacking/defending abilities, poison, and so on. and i agree, the swimming speed needs to be a bit quicker. Being able to pick teams and certain characters would also be awesome. it looks absolutely amazing too! well, keep up the work. I hope that you all can add a bunch of great stuff, and possibly make a blitzball mod or something!

Oddly enough, this is reminiscent of an older deathball map called .. coincidentally.. DB-Blitzball. You might want to examine some of the similar elements.
Quote:
This is my second map and is much better, appearance-wise. The map, I think, incorporates more strategy because you have to watch your health or you'll drown, which isn't really a bad thing, but it can be annoying if you don't expect it. There are two portals at half field which teleport you to a small, empty room to catch your breath in. You also spawn in a room with a bunch of teleporters which bring you to the playing field. I had to do this because the engine didn't like my playerstarts in the water volume actor .

http://maps.4cows.net/4cows/deathbal...age=info&id=16

It also reminds me of the short-lived gametype "WaterPolo".. and much as I would love to provide a link to it, I prefer not to see it ever again.

Incredible idea, and execution (scripting, or whatever made it possible).

However, I unfortunately didn't find it any fun at all, even though I like the original BR game type.

I also thought that some elements of the map was a bit "newbie" ish... I mean, parts of the map looks professional, but other parts severly lack polish.

I got some noticeable slowdown when I entered the sphere, but I easily fixed it by lowering my resolution, but it's still kind of a hassle. Other than that, it's great!
