The Winter of Our Discontent
After the Antaran’s destruction of Pax Humanica, they had complete control of the media serving the younger races. They used this control to rekindle old hatreds and present themselves as the only power that could keep the new pax. The ancient humans would have referred to this strategy as “divide and conquer.” Even after the collapse of the Antaran Hegemony, the centuries of repeating the messages had their effect, making it difficult for the younger races to cooperate. But we Grendarl are used to constant striving. We find that the strongest survive. And our strength will enable us to become the Masters of Orion.

I could probably take on either CR-143-CIOJ or Quaaesil, but the combination is going to cut through the heart of my empire and there’s nothing I’m going to be able to do. I put everything I had into the defense of Telum, but it wasn’t enough. I could probably hole up in the Loquace and Echinda systems (cut off by Orion) and wait for Riloxtat take the diplomatic victory (or for one of the Ithkul to take over the rest of the galaxy and finally defeat the NOs and hope an election happens with me as the only member of the Senate. But even if I could do that, that would be a hollow victory.) I’ll have 2 X’s, but I doubt that the others are waiting for me to grab. I’m not a bitter ender, and this is impossible, not easy. So on to the AAR: Issue: Winter of Our Discontent Modifications: Discussion: The Winter of Our Discontent (WOD) included modifications to the base relations table that made all playable races start with negative relations. The galaxy was a generally hostile place, but I was still able to make alliances and so were the AI empires. Things started to fall apart on Turn 110 when the CR-143-CIOJ Empire switched sides and declared war on me. The intent of the changes to base relations was to have a generally more hostile galaxy. In this it seemed to succeed. This mod seems to have made it particularly for for the Harvesters as the other races will be fighting each other at the start of the game and not be able to concentrate their efforts on the defeat of these monstrosities. The two Ithkul Empires in the game seemed to be gobbling up my allies, and did destroy the Psilons. As far as making it more or less difficult for the human player, it DOYPS. You will be more likely to be at war at the beginning of the game, but the AI empires will also be hampered by more wars. And when you do finally get an alliance, they might switch sides at the drop of a hat. Recommendation: Use the MOD Mod for a change of pace. Issue: Lots of small ships or a few big ones? Discussion: In previous games I built no warships smaller than light cruiser as I feel it’s hard to make a combat effective ship smaller than that, especially at higher tech levels. (Note: I’m not counting system ships or transports and their escorts.) In this game I started to build destroyer-sized combat ships to try to get more armadas in space at the cost of survivability. I’m not sure how much survivability I paid as I was also at a tech disadvantage for most of the game. Recommendation: Avoid small combat ships whenever possible. Anyone have any other commets, recommendations, or other “kips?”
