Advanced Movies Tutorial

Okay, i already made 2 Tutorials on unreal Movies (Or Gifs). I suggest you read them first, before you do this, because you might not understand stuff otherwise, such as demo recording, dumpframes and so on. So if you're never heard of this stuff, You can find the Tutorials here:
Animated Gifs | Simple Movies

Intro:

Okay, first of all i'll explain how i got to know this technique and stuff. I was watching an UT99 Frags movie, and was impressed how it was made. I didn't understand how it works, because i had never seen anything like it. It was all in 3rd Person view, and cycled around the Players with cool movement effects (I've also seen this in some UT2004 Movies, such as Unrealnorth, but also some others). Well, then at the end of the Movie, i saw the credits, and i got 1 name, and 1 link: RypeLCam (http://rypel.clansmiley.com)

So that's where i went, and i found, that there was a Version for UT2004. It's in the UT2004 Section. After a complicated installation and a little playing around, i finally got it to work. Thanks to ep1taph, and his Tutorial, wich helped me understand it a lot.

You should also have a look at that tutorial, because all thanks go to him. I'd have never come this far without him.

I also want to thank RypeL at this point, because he created this wonderfull tool for us, the community. He doesn't even create movies himself.

Thanks a lot!

Now i'll explain what you'll learn in this tutorial:
This tutorial explains professional Movie making for unreal Tournament 2004. Following is possible:
  • Free camera View
  • Pause the game, and let the camera move
  • Change the camera speed
  • Camera moving a track
  • Camera leaning
This works with demos, but you will understand what i mean excactly later on. Now let's start!

Needed files, Edits and Installation:

Files Required:
First of all, you'll need the RypeLCam Mutator (by RypeL), that is used for Video editing. You can download that file Here (45,0 KB). That archive has 2 Files: Install.txt and Cam.u. Extract the Cam.u file to "C:\UT2004\System", and ignore the Install.txt for now. You can also have a look at it. More about that later.

Note: You won't need this with the newest RypeLCam Version.
The second file that you'll need is CompaMut 0.1. CompaMut is actually used for enhanced Demo watching. So let's get version 0.1 (wich is an old version, but is required for RypeLCam) Here (280 KB). Just put the CompaMut0_1.u into "C:\UT2004\System", and ignore the other files. You won't need those.

You will need a Demo file, of what you want to make a Video of. If you don't know what it is, read the other Tutorials.

INI File Setup:
What was the problem for me was getting it to work. Now you have all needed files downloaded. This is what i'll explain now. As the installation required a little toying, i'll show you how it works:

1. Creating a new Profile
Yes, it IS possible to create profiles in UT2004, but it's complicated. This is what you do:
  1. Go to your "c://UT2004/System" folder
  2. Make a copy of each "Default.ini" and "DefUser.ini"
  3. Rename the copy of "Default.ini" to "movie_ut.ini"
  4. Rename the copy of "DefUser.ini" to "movie_user.ini"
  5. Open up "movie_user.ini"
  6. Search for the Entry "H=", and make sure, that there is nothing after that "="
  7. Same as above for "I=", and "NumPadx=" (x being a number from 1 to 9)
  8. Search for "DemoMenuClass=GUI2K4.UT2K4DemoPlayback" and change it to "DemoMenuClass=Cam.CamDemoPage"
  9. Save the file and Exit
  10. Create a new shortcut for "UT2004.exe" on your Desktop
  11. Right Click on that shortcut and select "Properties"
  12. Change the Target to "C:\UT2004\System\UT2004.exe -userini=movie_user.ini -ini=movie_ut.ini"
  13. (Optional) Rename the Shortcut to "Movie UT2004"
You can also watch a Flash of this here. Use Left and Right Buttons to Scroll through the Pages.

As we have the Profile now, here's some more stuff stuff for your movie_ut.ini:
  • F11=ToggleScreenShotMode
  • Delete=Dumpframes stop|fixedfps
  • Insert=Dumpframes start|fixedfps 30
  • PageDown=Stopdemo
  • PageUp=Demorec
You should already know what they are, and how they work from my previous Tutorials. If you don't then read them, or send me a PM. Note: Do NOT Modify any of the movement keys (WASD), K, I, L, Numbers, Numpad Keys!

Demo and Camera:

Loading the Demo:
Now we have all the setup done. Double click the Movie UT2004 Shortcut on your Desktop, to start UT2004 with the Movie Profile. In the Main Menu, Click on "Communiy", and go to the "Demos" Tab. Select the Demo, that you'd like to use.

Press on "Watch Demo", and wait untill it's loaded. When it's done, Press pause (This MUST be the Pause button). Press Escape, to see the Top Controll bar. Press escape again to remove it, and now you will see the Text "Now Viewing from DemoRecorder. Disable/Enable this text with 'L'". By Pressing "I" you can view some information about RypeLCam. And "H" gives you Help with description for each key, and what it does.

Camera Points: (Targets)

These look like arows since V1.5. A great improvement, as you can see where they are pointing.
Keep the demo paused, and press L a few times and make sure that the mouse pointer is showing up (because it does when you hit L). Then press K, to enter a special "Paused Spectator Mode". Now you will be able to move using WASD. You will only be able to move your mouse, but only when moving in a direction. You can only move in 1 Direction at the time.

Make sure, that you have NumLock activated. Now navigate through the map and chose a place to begin your flight through the Map. When you've found the place, where you want to begin, you press NumPad5. This will place a Target. Move somewhere, and place Targets all few seconds/Metres. Make sure that you don't go through walls / Meshes or whatever. You can cycle through all of your CamPoints using + and - on your NumPad.

You can change your Speed by pressing NumPad1 for speed decreasement, and NumPad2 for speed increasement. 1-9 have fixed speeds. NumPad5 Adds a new CamPoint, and NumPad4 removed the previous one.

NumPad6 Selects a Projectile. Projectiles are Rockets, Flak Balls, Bio Globs. All that kind of stuff. When selected a projectile, you can look at it, as if you were spectating it. This can give you cool effects.

NumPad7 and NumPad8 can be used to Roll. Select a CamPoint, and Press F7 to roll left, and F8 to Roll right. You can set this for each CamPoint.

NumPad9 Toggles the visibility of the Targets. There are 3 Views: See Targets, See Small Points, and Hide All. This is usefull if you want to Record the Video.

This is what it looks like after falling the place with CamPoints:
This Image Was Automatically Resized by using the Shot Tag. Click to view the full version

Creating the AVI:

When you're ready, you can Press NumPad3 to go through the Camera View. Do your Changes and experiment with the settings and options. When you're totally done, you can:
  1. Hide the HUD with "ToggleScreenShotMode"
  2. Start Dumping Frames (Using the Method of your Choice)
  3. Unpause the Game (if you want game movement)
After it's dumped, Exit the game, and do whatever you like with your Video. The rest should be easy to understand (if you read my other Tutorials)

Exemples:

Here are some exemples of what is possible. They aren't the best, because they're some of my first. But it's just to give you an impression of what you can do:

All of the Following Movies were created using the Dumpframes Method, VirtualDub, and were compressed using DivX:
CampGrounds
Rankin
TrainingGrounds
WTF

I hope this Tutorial was usefull!

Note: If you want support, and help, or suggestions, please visit the RypeLCam Support Forums! You can also ask things in this thread, of course, but i can't give you the support, that RypeL can. As i didn't create it, and i have NO idea of UnrealScript.

Neat tutorial m8, but, the link for CompaMut 0.1 is the same file & size as the RypeLCam Mutator.

Thanks! The file size doesn't matter, they're both so small (under a meg), so it doen't make any difference anyway

Evil,
this cam is awesome. Just one question, I'm having trouble tracking projectiles. How do you know when the one you want is selected.
TIA,

Well, when the projectile is selected, it's in the center of the screen, and you can look at it, as if spectating.

Rofl after I made my path with the cam I started it and used dumpframes to record it.

All together --> 1.550 screens :P

I converted it to .jpg and it was still 140 mb oO

Well, dumpframes uses much space. BTW: RypeLCam is now called SwiftCPU

Messing around with it is fun

Got everything working now..
Now I still got to figure out how all the effects you can use in Premiere work..

BTW, shouldnt all F4, F5 n stuff you mention in your tutorial be NumPad4, NumPad5 etc?

The sentence "The RypelCam forums are kinda dead now anyway" .... First its simply not true and especially when you made the tutorial there was still a lot of updates and stuff going on. the RypelCam forum is not a trashtalking forum! where you have posts every day. Theres not so much to discuss about a programm especially when its that easy like i think rypelcam is. But if theres something important and new releases, updates, you will get the information there and thats why everyone using RCam should visit this forums now and then! Saying this forums are dead is nt true and in the worst case it will prevent users from coming there and then they will miss updates and bugdiscussion, featurerequests and other important things.

And then the sentence "Anyway, i downloaded it, followed the instructions, just to find out, that it doesn't seem to work."
You then says that the people should skip the install.txt since its crap and all not working and stuff.
You can possibly imagine how happy i was about that. If i dont understand a programm i dont go out and say its crap. This is just insulting and unfair behaviour.
The install.txt contains and contained all necessary information a guy with a bit of a brain and a UT Installation needs. There was a short period when the info for CompaMut was missing but at the bottom there was always the link to the forum and in that forum you could find the additional information about CompaMut till it was also included in the install.txt for the next version.
I didnt included the link to the forum for fun! When i install a programm and i have troubles with it and i know theres a special forum for exactly this programm this is the first place to look for help.
Also your tutorial includes some outdated information, so people shouldnt/cant rely on it. For example compamut is no longer needed and important features like saving a camera are not explained.

Dont get me wrong: all in all this tutorial is good but i would be more then happy if you change the things i talked about above since they can really confuse people. I have nothing against critisism, but that has to be for a reason. "This tool is crap cause i made something wrong and couldnt get it to work" is no reason. I made this tool only for the Community(i dont do UT04 vids myself) and i think i can expect that its treated in a fair way then.

Also the link you provide to RypelCam leeds to an outdated version.

Wow. Big post!

Okay, i must say, i apologize to you. I did not in any way mean to offend you. I didn't want to attack RypeLCam in any way. I didn't want to say that anything about it is crap. I wanted to say that it isn't very newbie-friendly. I myself had a bit of problems, because not everything was explained.

I see that the Forums are not dead, and didn't mean to offend your forum. It may be that i am used to bigger forums. So a forum with perhaps 1 post per day doesn't seem very alive.

I am aware that RyleLCam is now called "SwiftCPU", but i havn't had time to update that part yet. I'll do that asap. I will also change the parts you talked about. I'm happy that you tell me this, because sometimes people don't realize they're offending, until somebody points it out.

I didn't think about that fact when i wrote this, so i didn't pay much attention to that.

The reason i made this tutorial for was to
1. Make your mod more known, because hardly anybody knows of it
2. Give especially new users, but also advanced users a good description.

I could have never made this tutorial without your install.txt! And also without ep1taph's tutorial, this would have been impossible. I am very thankfull to both of you (also if it didn't sound so in the tutorial, i apologize).

I'd love to help you promote rypeLcam, so it gets more known in the community

I'll try to keep this tutorial as up-to-date as possible. To do: Update to SwiftCPU, and explain new features.

And read your PMs

Okay, thanks for the Info! It's a bit confusing, as the forums are still labeled SwiftCPU, and the download is also still called that...

Why not just press the Pause button (on your keyboard)?
