Question about followers' looting

We already know that your followers will take their share of loot automatically when you open containers or search bodies. But will they still do it if it encumbers/overloads them, or if they have 24 items in their backpack? And can we fill their inventory with junk like rocks and sticks if they don't? >=D

Good question. On a similar note, will there be bags of holding, gem bags, key rings, etc. to keep our character's inventory slots open so that we don't have to give the NPCs our good stuff.

Actually, they changed this. The NPCs will not race the party to get loot. Some NPCs will require a certain amount of loot in order to join the party. I'm not sure how NPCs who get a set portion of the treasure will get their share.

I really hope that there'll be scroll cases, bags of holding, gem bags, etc.

How many slots are available in the inventory anyway? How many arrows, darts, bullets can you stack in one inventory slot?

Steve or Huy said the followers will automatically get a cut of the loot as it drops (they just won't run forward and get it). I interpret it to mean something like this: If follower S signed on to get all the magic scrolls, and you get treasure that includes a magic scroll, it will automatically transfer to S's inventory without you doing anything.

Now if that is actually the way it will be featured in the game it will be perfect!

So you actually won't know right away what they're taking? I mean, if you can see them take it you can go "Damn! Don't take that sword!" but this way when you pick up the treasure, you get what you see and you can just go "I'm betting that ******* couldn't get something as cool as this" or something.

Well, presumably you made an agreement with them when you hired them on as to what treasure they'd get ... not that the chaotic types would feel bound by that, mind you.

IIRC -- you can view an NPC's inventory, just not manipulate it. Anyone?

Well, you can always check their inventory to find out.

Well, even if you can't, just save, kill them, and find out for yourself

Though I wonder if they drop useless stuff you give them to make room for better loot ("Carrying your stupid rocks wasn't in the contract, mister..." )

I wonder that too. Because if they do have a limited inventory and do not throw your stuff away utill they get to a shop, then we all know what will happen. Players will end up filling their followers' inventories with junk so they get all the new items to themselves.

That would not be good.

I think I'll solve this little problem by not having any followers. Though, I'm going to roll my ass off in character generation to get great scores so I can do it on my own.

Call me cheezy.

I will definitely roll a lot in character generation as I seem to be infamous for rolling bad scores, but please, do not call me cheezy. I'm not a fan of dairy.

I may or may not allow NPCs to join me, depending on how awkward the whole loot system and the NPC system in general is, though I imagine I will to simply indulge in every aspect of the game.

Precisely... I can choose not to, and that would keep me from having a serious discussion about the meaning of "lawful" and "good" with my Paladin.

Something else to bear in mind: Just because some NPCs take a share of loot, doesn't mean that they all do.

For example, a paladin NPC may be happy to join the party to battle evil and not care about a monetary reward.

From the sounds of it, different NPCs will have different conditions for joining the party - some may be monetary, some may be ethical - I expect that if you don't want your NPCs taking your spoils there'll be options to that effect.

That's true. And having a holy warrior tagging along wouldn't be a bad thing. It's not likely such an NPC will turn on you later, unless you do something bad.

i'm quickly skimming the thread, so forgive me if i missed anything, but yes NPC's that loot may loot heavy items, bringing them into worse encumbrance states. to get them to remove items that you as a PC do not have access to, one option is to take them to a shopkeeper, and they will sell items "as they wish".

cross your fingers!
