asking Infogrames about older games - will anybody answer?

I've been emailing Infogrames trying to ask about some older titles - possible republications and such since they've indiscriminately eaten so many other publishers.. I've had no luck emailing various customer supports so I was wondering if any Infogrames employees on the forums can at least put me through to the right person to harrass (uh.. I mean 'talk to') about this?

Yeah know.....since Infogrames doesn't exist anymore (now it's Atari), you might find trouble getting help for older titles.

I think you mean Atari doesn't exist anymore (now it's Infogrames) - I refer to a comment I found somewhere else on the forums (don't know the exact reference though) whereby naming some dodgy little buggy a Rolls Royce doesn't make it one. (although more like naming a Howitzer a Cessna in this case)

And it's not the name change that makes finding stuff difficult, it's the fact that some older products were put out by other publishers (now eaten) so it's a matter of whether or not the content is available to the new publishers or not.. that and if ever any support staff at Infogrames (they'll always be Infogrames to me - for good or bad) awake from cryogenic sleep to empty their inboxes

The original Oddworld games for PC - Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exodus - a classic pair that never got the duo-pack re-release they so rightly deserved.

It's sad but nowadays children are weaned on a saturated market of 1st person shooters and 3rd rate 'adventure' games. And whilst there are numerous quality titles available (NOLF2, Rise Of Nations, etc.) they often lack the innovation that the more recent 2D games addressed (with rare exceptions like GTA Vice City, standing as a monument to innovative AND attractive gaming). Everyone knows Doom and Quake and Wolfenstein but how many will remember Heart Of Darkness or Sheep or Get Medieval?

The art of game design seems to currently mimic the pop music industry like that.. hopefully I can find a game developer to employ me though and then I can try my own hand at avoiding potential hypocrisy

Mad Danny -
I believe our studio did the Oddworld's, I don't think they are going to let us republish them, but who knows. It's worth bringing up at least, but don't get your hopes up .

Also, remember that we do distribution for Strategy First which has a number of good games like you mentioned aren't big in the market anymore. I personally love RTS games, etc. If you are looking for some good games and such, let me know Mad Danny. Just tell me what platform(s) you own and what type of game you are looking for and I may have some suggestions that you'll enjoy .

Karthik -
I know what you mean. Our office came from GT Interactive. Oh well though, we are still her at heart and work hard to put out the best games possible; though now we are more focused on DBZ and Yu Yu Hakusho lately here and less of the racing, hunting, and FPS/war titles.

ooh.. a reply!

hmm.. I wonder how viable it might be to consider rereleases fron the perspective of what is now such a big company..

although there have been quite a lot of budget re-releases of other older titles so that must mean something.. meanwhile I guess I'll have to resort to plan B.. see if anyone has an iso until I have a credit card and can get a second-hand copy off eBay or thereabouts (oops I didn't just mention the 'i' word on an official forum ) - from a wannabe designer's perspective these are great titles for style and gameplay research

RTS games.. I have TA, Steel Soldiers, Homeworld, and about 15 others (not gonna dig out all the CDs to check just now :P)

I'm mainly a PC gamer, but try out old arcade and snes roms using an emulator since hunting around second-hand electronics stores in Japan is not so practical for someone without a fixed income :P ..also I couldn't afford a console what with all the PC games I buy (running at about 140 now)

put simply.. I like good games - any genre, any style as long as it has something unique or particularly well done to hold it against the plethora of others (for example why Rollcage Stage II will always be that much better than Wipeout ever was) - unfortunately living in Australia means missing several interesting titles and some games being rather too expensive (relatively speaking.. remember no fixed disposable income yet) - so I doubt you could help me there unless you track some of the more distinct price changes in Australian stores (which even they don't do - although they do track what games are not published any more - something the publishers really should do but tend to try and deflect those problems back at the retailers)

Wow, I didn't know that you guys handle SF titles. That's why I'm seeing Infogrames logo on Platoon. So will you guys be handling Desert Rat vs Afrika Troops?

Ahh, I see now. Well, if you ever come across a question and such, let me know. And what do you mean a reply? Heh, I always try to reply to those on the general board if I can add anything or answer a question .

Karthik -

Yeah, I just started playing platoon, it's not half bad. We ended up having a couple overstock that were going to be tossed as the person they were to go to wasn't in business anymore. Every once in a while we get a free game like that; but it's rare. But yeah, we do distribution for them and I don't know if those two are going to pass through here. I'm sure they will though .

Infogrames should reproduce the old 2600 ET game. I can't get enough of it.

Hehe, no Karthik. Sorry, I hope I didn't confuse you on that one. Strategy First does the games and we distribute for them, so I'm sure those games will ship from our office most likely. As for the free game thing, we do sales kits here and sometimes a company goes out of business and we have extra games or kits for that those companies were supposed to get. So instead of throwing them out, they let the employees take them. At least that way they don't go to waste you know? Otherwise they'd be compactor food. This doesn't happen often actually, but sometimes around holiday it does as they order a few too many.

finally got a response from customer support..

I had inquired about possible republication of the original Abe games on PC.. so what did I get as a response?.. "Microsoft developed Munch's Oddysee" and a link to the PlayStation version of Abe's Oddysee on eBay or thereabouts

is it just me or does this seem slightly less helpful than if I hadn't got a response at all?

my quest is doomed!

Have you simply tried looking for a used copy of the Oddworld games on half.com? I'm sure you can find them there on the cheap.
