Concerning the short freezes
Since many people are experiencing the same problem, that is, short freezes during gameplay, despide having good fps. This is often combined with exceptionally long load times and very slow gameplay at the start of a level.
I was just wondering, if possibly somebody from Atari could actually confirm a patch is being worked on? I can just imagine a bunch of tired programmers drinking strong black coffee into the early hours of the morning fixing it. Just say my vision is correct? I thought I would contribute my 2 cents, and try to help out a little. I've noticed that exiting the game, the music continues to play on the desktop for a short while, along with other sound. It takes a while to stop, a lot of h/d crunching etc... for the system to be up and working nicely again. I don't have exceptionally many programs in the background either. I can't associate the problem to RAM, nor to CPU. It seems people with Geforce, Radeon, Inter, AMD alike have been experiencing the problem. The Nvidia SoundSTORM though might be a culprit? Just to clear things up, my system spec is: AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Barton ABIT NF7-S V.2 (Nforce2 Ultra400 mb SPP+MCP2-T) 512mb DDR400 Dual Channel RAM Radeon 9600XT Maxtor Diamondmax9+ S-ATA hd Logitech MX700 Cordless Optical Mouse Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 There should be no problems. Maybe everybody with the same problems should post a similar system spec, so we could somehow try to pinpoint a problem. And no, turning of precache skins doesn't affect things much. Nor does enabling H/W 3d audio, changing graphics detail, resolution, etc... Even after trying all these performance is not up to scratch. It was in the demo! |

I think it is RAM. I disabled "preload skins" and both the problems you describe went away.

Locking Up Problems
Hi.
I have exactly the same issues as you. I have the following AMD Athlon XP 2600 NForce NF2s ALH Motherboard (Onboard sound) Geforce 4 Ti4800SE 1GB Ram Microsoft Intellipoint Explorer Optical Mouse Windows XP Pro SP1 Single player Deathmatch seems OK but Onslaught and Assault are pretty much unplayable. Demo worked great! Regards Skids |

It obviously isn't RAM that is the problem, nor the precaching of skins... 512 should be enough.
Peolple with a gig of ram get the same problem too. |

Overdrive is not implemented yet for 9600XT cards... so no, it is not changing the GPU speed on the fly. At least not for me... so that is not the problem.
I downed my RAM speed from 325Mhz to 300Mhz, but my card's specs are 325Mhz anyway so there was no change. |

Oddly enough, my main problem is pretty much only the lightning gun. Out of nowhere, I cannot see what I'm firing. However, people are still jumping around firing and killing me.
It's happened once or twice w. Rocket Launcher, but it happens almost 75% of the time w. lightning gun. |

OK, I have the same problem. I had it with 512MB of ram, and now with 1.5GB of RAM (not bought specifically to fix this problem mind you) it still happens, though it is less often and for shorter periods. My HDD crunches less with more RAM, obviously, and when I exit the game the music stops immediately and there is no UT2004 task freeing memory in the task manager (both of these problems were there with less RAM)
So, This must be a bug, but I think the that the game needs at least 512MB of ram and is much better with 1.0GB. In otherwords, there is a bug, but Atari have also understated on the specs needed to play the larger onslaught maps. It is interesting to note that by far the worst onslaught level for me is frozen icey one at the top of the list. I can also confirm that I do not suffer the problem at all in deathmatch. For the record, my current system specs are: 1.5GB RAM AMD ATHLON 2700+ ASUS A7N8X MOBO 120GB 7200rpm 8MB cache HDD ATI RADEON 9800 Pro 256MB RAM and I am also using ADSL broadband for online play. I have the same issue
Running an XP BArton 2500+ 512 pc3100 ram geforce 4 ti 4600 4x agp nforce 2 ultra 400 mobo with onboard suround sound by Epox. All drivers up to date as of yesterday. I believe the problem happens to me more when I look at some of the nifty special effects in the level, but that could just be a stupid user looking for something to blame.... besides Epic ![]() |

OK, a lot of the threads seem to be coming to a similar conclusion that this may actually be a sound thing. I have solved it for me by changing the audio settings to H/w 3D audio instead of 3D Audio (Why does it warn me that using my hardware would slow things down!!) And in the game settings I turned of speach recognition thingy and also precaching all skins (The skins thing was to try and improve my level load time)
Now the game runs great for me. Hope this helps the rest suffering this really anoying problem Cheers MONK3R |

Unfortunatly that doesnt work for me =/
I've tried running the game with EVERYTHING off...sound, lowest graphics n stuff, but I still experiance the short freezes. My fps can be like 100 and then the game freezes for 6-9 seconds. This is without doubt a game bug or some coding that went berserk ![]()

Sorry it didn't work m8, thought I might have been on to a winner. Still seems ok for me though (Sorry, I know that isn't helping).
I think we are really going to have to wait for Atari/Epic to make some statement about this and schedule a patch. Will let you know if I come up with any other suggestions. Just out of interest, do u have this problem in deathmatch, as I never did. Regards Monker |

Actually, when you mention it...I'm not sure I did...but I could be wrong. I'm just annoyed they haven't made a statement yet

What bothers me most is loading... by the time I enter the game almost all the nodes have already been built. The level starts out really slow, but gradually gets better. Once I'm playing I hardly notice anything anymore.
But the fact I miss out on a part of the game is bothering me, I'm probably more on the forums and tweaking the game than actually PLAYING the game. Damn I hope that patch comes out within a week! I know it can be hard to find but Atari must realise having such a major bug in a new game can be very, VERY detrimental to the popularity of a game in the future! |

Yeah I hear you =/ It's really important to have a good relationship with the customers. And why they haven't adressed the issue yet is really beyond my understanding. I rather hear them saying "We know about it and we're looking into it" then just being quiet.
And i'm doing the same thing...trying to tweak it...because it's beyond annoying once it start freezing up. ![]()

I've got the same problem.. Turning of precaching of skins helped a little, but it still freezes at high details, and a few times on all low details..
My setup: - Abit NF7-S v.2 - Asus Geforce FX 5200 Video Suite - AMD Athlon XP 2100+ - 1x512 DDR333 ram - Windows XP Could it be that we have to use the playdisc that is the issue, since UT2004 demo works fine? ![]() |

This should maybe be the "official thread" for this problem. If we can get it stickied, all the better (rather than have people continue to come here and put up new threads about the same problem).
As far as I can tell, it has so far been determined that it might be A.) a cache problem. Don't these freezes feel like your computer is trying to load something? Or b.) a sound problem. I mean I see that a lot of people have fixed the problem (or at least made it somewhat better) by changing sound settings. My specs: Athlon64 3000+ gigabyte GA-K8N Pro (NForce3) 512 megs Kingston HyperX ATi 9700 Pro 2 120 gig seagate drives, SATA, in RAID 0 NForceware 3.13 I have an old logitech optical mouse. I installed windows xp a week ago. This is a very fresh install with only a few games on it. I would think it's a problem in the nforceware unified drivers, but I see a lot of intel users with the same problem. I think it's just because a lot of people use nforce boards. I mean, I think that's why we're seeing a lot of people who have this problem, using nforce boards. |

It's not an NForce problem
I've got an intel board, 3.2c, SB audigy, gf4 4600, I get the freezes. My friend with a 2.8, SB live, gf 4600 also gets the freezes. Both of us running XP. Whatever it is, it is DAMNED irritating. I've fiddled with every available setting, nothing seems to work. I've had it go away for awhile, then come back with a vengeance later in the same session. Single player, multiplayer, any game type, doesn't matter. |

Just trying to figure out if I've got the same prob, or if I've got a different ails.
This freezing you're talking about, is it completely freezing your computer for more than a sec, or just slowing everything down to a near standstill? (I've read several threads so far, and no real description). I've (luckily) only had trouble with one map AS_Glacier, where everything slows down to a slideshow whenever the Plasma/Ion tank starts to move. Would this be the same prob, or another kettle of fish? [EDIT] Forgot to add specs and settings: Athlon XP 2500+ 1GB PC3200 RAM Radeon 9700pro Asus A7V8X-Gold/Deluxe (using onboard sound) Settings: All ingame settings at max, 4xAA and 8xAF from control panel It works like a charm in instant action, & every online game with the exception of the AS-Glacier [/EDIT] |

Small freezes during gameplay, sometimes around 5 seconds. It doesn't crash the computer though, the game resumes after the freeze.

Same here but unfortunately, I have this kind of freeze in every game modes (singleplayer, multiplayers, instant action) and it really sucks since I really CAN'T play anything of the game.
My specs: Intel Pentium 4 2,26GHz 512MB RAM DDR 333 MSI NVidia GeForce4 Ti-4600 128MB with lastest drivers Sony DVD-Rom / LG burner SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 with lastest drivers Windows XP Pro Nothing is overcloacked Well tomorrow, I will use the ultime solution, I will reinstall all my system with my drivers and only ut2004 and if it still doesn't work, then I will wait about 5 days or so and if there is nothing new from Atari/Epic then going to exchange for a game that really work! |

Must be some combination of other problems I've read about then... Using h/w audio seems to have fixed it though (that I'm using an audio codec, and no hardware is another matter ) |

Just update your soundcarddriver. It worked for me and it seems to work for everybody who updated their driver.
The old driver causes the mouselag and the shocking music and sound. |

The newest Nforce2 drivers I could find were from 2003. On the Nvidia site.
