Great Escape

I'm going to (Six Flags) Great Escape and Splashwater Kingdom in Lake George, New York for the first time. Anybody have any info on this park? Has anyone been there before?

I don't have my log book with me, so I'm working from memory, but I was at Great Escape in 2002.

Based upon my observances and talking to some people in the park, it appears that the park was better run before Six Flags bought it. Oddly enough, that doesn't surprise me. But, it did impress me that I heard lots of grumbling in the lines.

In my opinion, Comet (relocated from Crystal Beach, where it had two lives: one as Cyclone, then it was rebuilt as Comet) was, by far, the best ride in the park. Absolutely make sure you get on the Comet.

If you want to get on Alpine Bobsled, based upon what I was hearing in 2002 from other guests, catch it early. I understand it isn't running very frequently. When I was there, it ran for about 1 hour, during which time I was able to ride. It was rather dull -- it actually made Cedar Point's Disaster Transport look thrilling. But, it's still a coaster!

Nightmare At Crackaxle Canyon has a painfully slow-moving line. Being a mediocre coaster, it's really not worth a long wait. But, if you finish everything else, it's not a bad ride.

Steamin' Demon was enjoyable. When I rode it, the skies really opened up, and I got wetter than on any water ride. While I didn't mind, I thought it was a bit rude of the operators to then hold us in the rain for a while (unnecessary -- there was only one train running!), then laugh at us as we came into the station. But, I've often found riding coasters in the rain to be lots of fun, provided the coasters aren't too fast. (Really fast coasters can be a bit painful in the rain! Cedar Point's Millennium Force in the rain feels like it's sandblasting the face! Yeouch! I've been on coasters that go up to 72 MPH in the rain without pain, so the threshhold is somewhere between 72 and 93 MPH. But, that's getting off the subject.)

Great Escape is a small park, but it has some enjoyable rides.

Have a good time!
