How Research works

This is not really a noob question, but I am at turn 480, and I am using patch 1.25, so my research is hella slow now cuz I am about tech level 40. I was wondering if I could get a detailed explanation on how research points are allocated, because I am not sure if putting 95% of my research points into one school is actually working. BTW, I am genreating about 2 million rp's per turn.

Tricky question, not shure il be 100% acurate here.

The more you spend in one aria, the faster the aria will gain "levels" (like in a CRPG (and sometimes RPG), but you pay for the "EXP") When you reach a certain point in a level, there is a chanse that it will begin to research what you have available (what you know that you will find). So lets say you put 95% in one field, then your field will level upp more often, and the more money you put into it (and the more test tubes you have) the faster it will go.
Thats the best way i can describe it in a moderatly easy to understand way.

Cool. So how do I control how fast it goes once I begin researching a tech? For example, when phaser beam becomes available for research. In other words, once I see the particular tech in that box that says turns remaining. Many of the techs I am researching right now count down to 1 turn left, but then stay that way for more than 1 turn. This thread might become complicated enough to where the admin should move it into the regular forum...

Check your sitrep, you may be getting messages saying that due to increased security requirments the tech will take a few more turns to be completed. Those messages are usually at the top of the sitrep.

That may not be the problem you're describing though, I've never checked if it changes the number of turns to completion in the tech window after a message in sitrep so I don't know if it's the same situation or not.

There is no sitrep notification of anything, it just changes the turns remaining on its own, prolly because its an unreported negative overun or something.

The overall research tab shows the level in each school. If you look in the matrix for that school you can see what is available at which level. After the latest patch tech seems to have been slowed down even more than the tech slowdown mod from before. You are producing 10x more research than me at turn 450

Well...

From what I've seen this is whats happening...

Especially in the case "rushing' Physical and Mathematics science lvls higher then the rest.
You can end out gaining say Dark Energy Miniaturization Lvl 1 before actually getting Dark Energy Cannon.
So it wont finish researching the miniaturization until you have the actual cannon.
(I had this happen for both Guass and Dark energy cannon in my last game)
Really those techs should need the required lvl in physical or energy "tech trees"

Seeing as I never got my tech far enough. What is the highest tech lvl? (i just got the game, and I win through senate or X's and so never got my tech far enough to 'finish' one off. )

The highest tech level is nominally 50, thought there is a slight random factor as to what level a given tech actually appears, so it may vary between about 48 and 52, I would guess. Personally, I've never gotten beyond level 42 or so...
