PD efficiency

Hello

After playing for some time, and well not caring enough, i have some questions regarding PD.

First, i want to find what is the optimal amount of damage i need to do with PD to destroy efficiently missiles and fighters with shield.

Sure i could add one unique number of PD but i am wondering if 4xPD is better than 2 2xPD. Depending on the situation it might help me to increase my defense against those damn missiles and fighters that the Ithkul are sending me.

I have seen a lot of post regarding the PD bugs. Here what i have seen: When i take control and that i see the missiles arriving on me, the ships don't fire. However, it is only the first time after my ships are firing normally getting a good parts of those missiles.

Now i just want to get more effective in getting those missiles down.

The best thing is simply to take one of the later wepon types, that you have min tek on, and place as many as posible, on a PD mount, on a smaller ship, simply fill the ship (unles you have ECM, or stealth on the TF that you want them to be a part of, in which case you shuld have it on your PD ships).

Firstly it doesnt matter whether you have 4 weapons or 2 and 2 weapons. It works out just the same.

Try getting hold of Lightning Field Generators (LFGs) thats one of the best PD weapon. It doesnt have much range so your Task Forces might not be able to cover each other but it packs a hefty punch.

As for efficiently killing missiles and fighters its a matter of hitting the target and doing just enough damage to kill it so that you dont waste the extra damage. Late in the game the shields and armor of targets is much greater than they hit points ie. it can be a very good idea to use Shield Piercing and/or armor piercing weapons. Thats one reasons LFGs are so good they pierce both.

My suggestion:
If you have LFG then put a few of those in PD mounts on each ship. Thats your last layer of defense. These will defend against anything just about to hit your Task Force or fighters swarming you.
The first layer of defense should be a cheap slightly older weapon to which you have the necessary modifications (miniaturization, autofire, armor piercing etc.). Take a few of these and put them in light mounts to increase range slightly. These weapons will allow your Task Forces to help each other defend.

As for the PD bug some say it exists some say it doesnt. Make sure you have patched MOO3 as there were some big problems in the release version. I dont know much about the problem but try reading a few topics in the bug section for possible fixes. Also check out the stickied posts in the Strategy forum alot of nice information there.

Light mount vs. PD mount comparison
longer range ||||| slightly faster recharge
more damage ||||| more accuracy
