Antaran X question

From what I've been reading on this forum people say that the guardian may hold an X. I want to achieve the X victory, but I have no idea whether I should fight the guardians to access an X that only that machine only has or do I just have to send the expeditions leaving those behemoths alone to win

I think there is a 20% chance of a guardian hiding an X and it is set-up so a maximum of 1 X can be found this way. I say a maximum because it could be that no X is hidden by a guardian.

Your best bet to get all the X's is to send out lots of eXpeditions until you either get them all or notice that your eXpeditions start taking much longer to do anything and lose ships until they are all destroyed, that means that either another race has captured an X or one is hidden by a guardian. Then you have to take out the guardians and start spying on the other races to try to find that last X. You can also capture X's when invading enemy planets.

I've collected all X's many times without getting any from guardians (although you can't tell whether alien races got their X's from guardians or eXpeditions).
