ummm... Upgrade?

If there are no options in the in-game settings to lower the color depth then try checking if there is a config file you can modify as often enough there are options the game can support that are not made available in the games interface.

Also lower the resolution and turn off (or set to lowest) all video and graphics options.

What video card make, model, RAM and AGP speed do you have installed? This will help qualify my first suggestion or let us know if you just have something configured terribly wrong.

note that I am NOT official tech support

The GeForce 4 MX line is a pretty stripped down video card and I would replace it as soon as possible. I like the nVidia cards and use an FX 5200 Ultra. It's a low end but high-speed card for todays standards.

The nVidia drivers can also tweak some options if you go to display settings (right click on desktop and "properites") and look at the advanced options there. You should be able to adjust a few of the options for the graphics driver and improve performance here and there.

I'm not on my home system (on the road and using the laptop right now) so I can't go look at what options the drivers provide but I know you can adjust a lot of the hardware through the unified drivers provided by nVidia.
