Dark Ride Custom Scenery: Download Available

Whew, it's over - after numerous weeks working with the object editor, 3D modeling, texture selecting, file transfers, text files, video editing, and trying to find time to do real life work and eat in between, Marnetmar and I, finally present, the Dark Ride Set.

As the editor evolves, we will update this collection to include improvement of standard object behavior.

Version 1.0 Notes (tested on North American Version w/Patch 2):
Wall/Roof objects will stack nicely, however, they will not automatically "jump" to the next valid location. Just use your Shift Key and and they will line up easily (you will still see the object jump in even increments).

The Global Delete function is not implemented. You'll have to use the single trashcan (or right click) to delete each object.

No Collision Detection. That's correct, and it's a good thing however, we wouldn't recommend placing a wall on a path, unless you want your peeps to magically walk through solid objects.

The Onyx set "may" appear a different color (on occasion), this is an unknown issue right now, but it usually corrects itself after a few moments.

IMPORTANT:
The Dark Ride set was thoroughly tested between a number of computers. Although we don't foresee any problems, it's best to back up any saved coasters, parks etc. If you feel any of this scenery is causing havoc with your game, you can easily remove both sets by going in to your Program Files/Rollercoaster Tycoon 3/Styles/Themed/ folder, and look for the two Dark Ride folders to delete. Remember, if you download these sets, you are accepting full responsibility, as these add-ons are not supported by Frontier or Atari.

Let's get Scared!

The JCat (Pumper) Dark Ride Set

A)Pitch Black Wall, B)Stone Arch, C)Extended Pitch Black Wall D)Stone Wall,
E)Creepy Vertical Glass Tunnel, F) Onyx Wall (colorize your own pinstripes),
G)Stone Roof, H) Lightning Wall, I) Smoked Glass Wall, J)Creepy Glass Horizontal Tunnel,
K)Onyx Roof (colorize your own pinstripe), L)Smoked Glass Roof, M)Pitch Black Roof,
N)Chief Death Face Panel, O)Track Coil (can colorize), P)Wall of Portraits.

The Marnetmar Dark Ride Set

A)Pitch Black Horizontal Tunnel, B)Pitch Black Vertical Tunnel, C)Castle Base Wall,
D)Castle Wall with Window, E)Small Climbing Spider, F)Castle Roof, G)Phantasm Sphere,
H)Eyeball, I)Castle Wall with Door, J)Castle Wall, K)Castle Brick Wall, L)Large Spider,
M)Klown Panel, 1 N)Skeleton Panel, O)Klown Panel 2

Manetmar Dark Ride Set continued..

A)Crypt, B)Tombstone 2, C)Tombstone 1, D)Dead Tree
Note: The Crypt and Tombstones will be found with
your Scenery Objects, while the tree will be with
the standard RCT3 foliage.

-----------------------
Download all files and unzip!
Both scenery sets will auto extract to their proper directory, but you should take a moment and download the install instructions, which are available in various languages as well.

----
Terrifying Tips:

~ The Pitch Black walls/roofs as well as the Black Vertical and Horizontal Tunnels are great for creating dark rooms as well as hiding props.

~ Use any of the standard RCT3 building scenery or our castle and stone sets for the external foundation of your ride, and use all the black styles for the inside.

~ Remember, although it appears dark inside, it's not "true" darkness, meaning, you will see your coaster track, but with black walls and tunnels, you can block a most of 'what's ahead'.

~ You can use the supplied roof titles and shift them just slightly above ground to cover existing paths. Peeps will still think they're on the real path, but now you have even more variety to dress up your walk-ways.

~ Day or night - it will be pretty dark inside, however, nighttime works best if you want to add lights near props for some momentary bright "chills'.

~ The black panel props (Klowns, Indian, etc.) work best against black environments. Objects, or non-black walls that are directly behind your panel will reveal the black border - you want that hidden!

~ Although we've developed this around a dark ride theme, there's no law saying a a good deal of these items won't be useful outside! :-)
---

Acknowledgments:
Frontier, for taking the best sim/coaster game on the planet to an unimaginable level (we still want an "official" dark ride expansion), and Atari for putting it into our hands.

We would like to thank Jonwil for making all this a reality with his Scenery Importer, which took us all by surprise, earlier then expected.

A big thanks also to Klinn, for providing the RCT3 mod community with essential information, as well as the latest additions to Jonwil's importer, oh...and that last minute test! ;-)

And finally, everyone in the custom scenery topic thread for sharing their ideas, tips and progress!

Check out the PHANTASM VIDEO for an example of what can be accomplished with this new scenery set.

Pumper, Marnetmar...really really thanks. It's ajoy to see how your best game expands over the immagination, and I think this is only the beginning! But now that the custom expansions are over...what would we dream for??? Maybe you or another one start a thread where all can post their ideas...maybe, but now I'll go play with it! You're the best, I'll never forget these names....Pumper, Marnetmar, Klinn, Jonwill.....now with black walls I can start a project....Thanks!!!!

I always thought that RCT3 went a little under expectations with scenery... people like you two and Klinn are perfecting the game where Atari left off!

Exactly - both Marnetmar and I shared equal pain and frustration during the building process .. so in the future, just say "you guys" if it's a 'team" project. i

We can't wait to see what people come up with!

mazeinies - you're not using the North American version I'm assuming, correct? If so, did you download the install instruction manual? There's a section which tells you where to 'direct' the installation if you are not using the US release. Also, if RCT3 is installed on a different drive letter (other then C), you need to make sure that you put that letter in (on the self extract program).

We're glad to hear people are enjoying this so far & are looking forward to seeing some of the cool Dark Rides people come up with in the future

mazeinies-the exe is set to extract the files to:

C:/Program Files/Rollercoaster Tycoon 3/Styles/Themed/

If this is the way your directory is set up, everything should be in the right place. If it's worded differently or on another drive, you'll have to select the correct path to extract it into your game so it will work for you.

Woo-hoo! More toys to enjoy!!!

This is an amazing collection of pieces to experiment with. And not just for other dark rides, there's all sorts of goodies in here (like the stone and castle walls, roofs and arch) that will be useful in all kinds of situations.

That small spider is going to be fun to play with - it's perfect for placing on walls just above riders' heads.

Great job on the scenery pack, you two. I'm glad you stuck it out, despite some of the puzzles and battles you had to go through while exploring these uncharted waters.

(Edit: I should also mention that these are the best-textured custom items I've seen. I gotta buckle down and figure out how to do that nice a job. More 's )

I'm not sure if the Beta for Soaked will cause any problems with these or not mazeinies. I've heard it would & I've heard it wouldn't, so I really don't know for sure. I'm not testing it myself.

Thanks all -

I may have posted the topic, but this was a team effort'; Marnetmar pulled just as much weight as I did getting this stuff out to the public to darken their attractions! "We" seriously appreciate your comments and thanks yous, but please don't forget that there were two of us involved. Thanks again!

Guybrush - the thank you to the mod 'community' was set so that I didn't have start a listing a number of names individually. I had mentioned Klinn, because a number of times I have gotten help through PM's, and he was the first to inspire I'm sure, all of us with his Electro-Shock set, along with the excellent updates to Jonwil's editor. By all means, don't feel left out in the cold. I'm sure you'll be turning a lot of heads when your JP set is unleashed.

Very nice

I will have to give this a try on my haunted ride in the park I am renovating right now. I was happy with what I did already except it always seemed too bright in there.

mazeinies - Have you tried to open a new sandbox & looked to see if the Dark Ride objects are there?

Maybe this will help you also:

Griffman, could please do me a favour and open your park in the Scenario Editor? Then see if the pieces are available there. I think the other way, the game does not consider them 'invented' yet, so they don't appear. Not sure why the rest disappeared through, that's odd.

We're all learning this custom object business together, so please bear with me as we try to sort out the problems.

Edit: Here's a better explanation of what to do that I just tested on one of my old parks:
- Open the park in the Scenario Editor
- Click the 'Set Up Inventions' button
- Select all the ElectroShock Set items in the center column
- Click the green button under the right column to move them there.
- Save the fixed park

This moves them from the "Items to be invented" column to the "Items available from start of game" list, so you won't have to wait for them to be invented.

This process is only needed for old parks. Any new sandbox parks will have them automatically, and if you're creating a new custom scenario you can choose which column to put the parts in just as you would for the regular RCT3 scenery items.
