Doors **Doors Updated (5/11/06): Post #70**

The latest version is doors11.zip.

Original Post

I proudly present to you doors!

Download
Installation
  • Download doors.zip from one of the above mirrors. (735,664 bytes)
  • Open the zip file and drag the "Doors" folder into the "Style/Themed" directory within the your Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 installation.
  • If you're using some fancy unzip program make sure that the option to preserve the directory heirarchy is enabled.
  • Do not try to rename the directories
Usage
  • The doors are set up as Ride Events so that they can be triggered by a car passing. They can be found under the ride events button.
  • Each door has three variants with 4, 6 and 8 second long animations. The opening and closing speeds are constant, it is the pause whilst the door is open that increases.
Revision History

1.0
Initial release

Known Issues
  • The animation sometimes jumps when the game engine tries to blend between the models at different detail levels

Examples
  • A short video exists at Uploading.com (12.6mb) to illustrate the effects available.

The Small Print...
The more observant of you will have noticed that we have cracked the animation structures. Whilst we are still working out how everything behaves the animation structures have to be generated by hand, hence the very simple animations used for the door pieces. Eventually the importer will be updated to handle animation import for 3d editors, but it is not a simple task and could take weeks, perhaps even months. In the meantime, please be patient. Rest assured that JonWil, Belgabor and I are all working quietly behind the scenes trying to improve the custom scenery lot! Do not ask us to produce animations for your pet park, we are primarily coders not animators, any requests made will fall on deaf ears.

My thanks to JonWil, Belgabor their observations and support, also to Vodhin for providing a quiet place for us to discuss custom scenery generation.

I want to express to the group of individuals (The_Cook, JonWil, Belgabor, and Vodhin) Hench forth known as "The Break Though Crew", my most heart felt thanks for all their efforts.

This gift of "Doors" is timed extremely well. Many Halloween park fans are going to have a wonderful time playing with them.

Here is wishing the very best of luck to The Break Through Crew on their endeavor to complete the task of cracking "animation structures". May all the time spent scratching your scalps and risking the development of male pattern baldness, not go unrewarded. I hope our gratitude will suffice. Each of you will have a place in my game now. Your names will be tied permanently as park guest who get free passes for life. I also want to point out that you will no longer have to hold a job as janitor in any park I build. LOL
If you have a preference as to a peep type you would like to represent you, just let me know. It can't be the park inspector though, sorry.

This is one of the best news I heared lately on this forum. CONGRATULATIONS to everyone involved for figuring that out. I'm not a modeller and therefore also no animator but i'm really looking forward to all the things coming up...
Too bad I cannot get the video No more slots for me....
EDIT: Just got the video. Those doors look friggin AWESOME!!!

I have to say, the one I may end up using the most is the last one (the Stargate iris)! But they all are equally impressive, and I will definitely find uses for all of them!

OMG The_Cook...I just watched the video demonstrating the doors and I have to say that this is one of the most exciting breakthroughs I've seen for this game in a LONG time. All the custom scenery has helped bring park design to new heights, but this will in fact change the ride experience significantly. Congrats to you and THANK YOU!!!

Yay! These should be great for things like haunted houses. I've been waiting for these since they made it! They shouldn't have ever taken them out in the first place.

Thanks a bunch! I really really appreciate this

Cool, It is great. very useful set.

How much limit for the animation? Is it possible make a loop animated as a scenery rather than "Ride Event"?

Yes. A ride event is just "normal" animatronics with different scenery settings. But if we hit you with a surprise, why not hit you really hard
Before any clever guys get the idea, we already thought at patching vanilla animatronics to act as ride events. This will be done when somebody has enough free time for it.

Yeah it does surpised me lotta, cos I thought it will be last thing on the importer.
Got what you mean, ride event seem is the best option for this door pack, rather than open and close all the time.

Patch on the Vanilla, hmm, sound good. But worry me because I don't know if it will be moving anywhere away from any track. Some reasons to have animated outside the rides, like queue themed or inside the shop like Rainforest Cafe.

Personally, for now we could have a coaster timed underground in a loop hooked up to the animation above ground to make the door open and close for paths. If timed correctly, it could look nice for movies.

Yeah, there's no limit to these, as long as you have the patients and the imagination! Very good idea too!
