Robotech The Shadow Chronicles Discussion
I just got & watched the "Sequel" to Robotech called Robotech The Shadow Chronicles. It tells the story of what happens after the New Generation saga of the show. If you are not familiar with that part of the show, it is when Scott Bernard leads a motley group of resistance fighters to overthrow the Invid, who have a base at Reflex Point. The story in the movie is set in 2044, and the Moon Base Ceras (I could be wrong) sends a fleet to try to take back Earth.
They are using new technology given to them by the Hayden, an alien race who are androids. The technology is called "Shadow Technology", basically it's like active steath, the enemy's sensors can not detect the ships. They also have a new type of Neutron Bomb, that would wipe out the Invid, but it also would pretty much destroy the Earth as well. Unbeknownst to the REF (Robotech Expiditionary Force), the technology given to them, has several major flaws. These flaws were intentional, as the Hayden's are really an evil race called "The Shadow" by the Invid. Their goal is to destroy all users of Protoculture, which is the source of the Robotechnology, and the power source for all the REF's weapons & ships. I won't spoil the plot too much. However, the movie does not really have an ending, it is more of the same cliffhanger stuff they pull on us at the end of the Macross Saga, when Rick (who is about 54 in the movie) says they will "Take to the stars" using the SDF-3. I am not certain if this is intended as a precursor to another Robotech series, or if they just ran out of money. It seems like a little bit of a let down, especially after waiting about 20 years for a proper sequel. However do not let my opinion sway you, it is really well done, and features several voice actors from the original series. Including Tony Oliver as Rick Hunter. Also features Mark Hamil, and Chase Masterson. I suggest a rental first, then if you enjoy it a purchase may be in order. BTW I think they pushed up the date again, cause I found it on Tuesday at Suncoast, it was supposed to be released Feb. 6. Discuss your thoughts on the film if you have seen it.
